THE BRIGHTON COMBINATION

After experiencing the ferment and excitement of Berkeley, California in 1966, (studying for a Masters in Criminology), when everything was in uproar including politics, life styles, culture and the arts, it seemed obvious that setting up a space in the UK where we could carry on these experiments was just about the only thing worth doing.

So returning to England, I decided to move to Brighton, Sussex, (with colleagues Ruth Marks and Noel Greig), to set up THE COMBINATION Ltd - a company set up to run a cultural & community development project in Brighton (in an old school) - the first of a new generation of multi-functional cultural development and social action centres comprising a 100 seat multi-purpose black box performance space, workshops, and a cafe, bookshop and print workshop.

The Combination company also ran a touring community theatre company that produced and staged over 40 shows and events in Brighton and nationally and received support from a wide range of statutory and voluntary funders earning over 50% of its annual revenue.
